IV Hydration & Vitamin Therapy

Chronic pain isn’t always caused by something mechanical. In the absence of a mechanical cause, things like nerve blocks and epidural steroid injections are ineffective. Thankfully, we have another pain management tool known as IV Hydration & Vitamin Therapy. The same treatment is known generically as Intravenous Nutrient Therapy (INT).

INT is an outpatient therapy that takes 30-45 minutes to complete. There is no downtime afterward. Patients receive treatment and immediately return to their daily routines.

Based on Myers’ Cocktail

Modern INT procedures are based on the pioneering work of the late John Myers, M.D. Myers was a Baltimore physician who treated patients with IV infusions consisting of vitamins and minerals. He passed away in 1984.

Unfortunately, he did not leave a detailed written record of his vitamin and mineral formulas. Therefore, we use what is known as a ‘modified Myers’ cocktail’ today. It includes six key vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B6 and B12
  • Vitamin B Complex (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin)
  • Calcium Gluconate
  • Magnesium Chloride.

The Myers’ cocktail is considered the gold standard of IV hydration & vitamin therapy. Each ingredient in the cocktail has been chosen for a specific reason. For example:

  • Vitamin C aides in muscle, bone, and blood vessel health along with supporting immunity.
  • Vitamin B12 helps reduce fatigue and migraine symptoms by maintaining blood cell and nerve health.
  • Vitamin B complex supports cell metabolism and synthesis of red blood cells, helping to combat fatigue.
  • Zinc fights infection and helps repair damaged tissue.
  • Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and increases energy production. It also helps prevent and treat migraine symptoms.
  • Glutathione is an antioxidant that helps balance radicals in the body.

Who Benefits from INT

INT is appropriate for chronic pain patients experiencing headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia pain, and muscle cramps. It is also appropriate for chronic fatigue syndrome and patients who experience frequent nausea. We recommend INT for immune support and to improve overall wellness.

How the Procedure Works

Again, INT is an outpatient procedure that can be done rather quickly. Patients visit the office where they meet with, and are cared for, by one of our skilled doctors or nurses. The Myers cocktail is prepared, then administered to the patient through a standard IV infusion.

The infusion takes between 30 and 45 minutes, during which time the patient is monitored and kept comfortable. Following the infusion, the patient is free to go about the rest of the day’s activities.

An Ongoing Therapy

IV hydration and vitamin therapy can be utilized as a single treatment or as an ongoing therapy. Lone Star Pain Medicine offers plans for single infusions, monthly wellness therapy, and even an annual wellness package. We invite you to contact us for more details.

Dr. Myers changed the way some people view medicine when he first developed INT. In the years since his groundbreaking work, medical practitioners have continued to build on what he started. Today, we are proud to offer INT through our IV hydration and vitamin therapy wellness plans.
