24 Aug Can I play tennis with shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain can be any type of pain in the shoulder. The shoulder is a complex structure made up of the collarbone or clavicle, shoulder blade or scapula and the upper arm bone or humerus. There are two joints – the Acromio-clavicular joint and the Gleno-humeral joint. These joints, supported by muscles, ligaments and tendons, maintain balance and mobility in the shoulder.
Shoulder pain can be caused due to –
- damage due to trauma to some part of the shoulder – bone, muscle, or other tissue
- repetitive stress from repeated motions, such as in tennis
- inflammation due to injuries or degenerative diseases, such as arthritis
Most shoulder problems are a result of damage to the soft tissues.
If you are experiencing shoulder pain, you should avoid all activities that may worsen the situation. So, if your shoulder is hurting, do not play.
While acute inflammation can subside within a few days, repetitive stress injuries may become chronic. So, if your pain is gradually worsening and becoming serious due to playing, discontinue playing until you get treatment and your doctor allows you to play. If pain persists for more than a few days or returns when you resume playing, see your pain specialist.
